Henri Matisse at Centre Pompidou through 18 June

Painter Henri Matisse, by Carl van Vechten, 1933

The Matisse show in Paris at Pompidou Centre is now open, and shall continue until June 18th, 2012.

We wanted to challenge the received wisdom that he was a happy painter, an easy painter, a sort of virtuoso of simplicity and joy,” said exhibition curator Cecile Debray.

“Matisse was obsessive, worried, wracked with doubt from the beginning to the end, and he showed it in his painting through this constant multiplication and exploration,” she said.
